Our Pet Services
Bringing your pet in for an annual diagnostic and wellness checkup can help reassure you that your dog or cat is healthy, or help us detect hidden diseases or conditions early. Early detection can improve the prognosis of many diseases, keep medical costs down, and help your pet live longer. Many dogs and cats are good at hiding signs that something is wrong, so subtle changes in their health or behavior might be easy to overlook. And, depending on the disease, some pets don’t show any symptoms.
Dogs and cats age quicker than humans, so it is even more crucial for our companion animals to receive regular exams. In addition, the risks of arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hormone disorders, and kidney and liver problems all increase with age.
During your pet’s wellness exam, we will perform a physical assessment, checking your dog or cat from nose to tail. We will also make sure your pet receives appropriate vaccinations and preventives. We will perform a diagnostic workup, which may include blood, fecal, and urine tests to check for parasites and underlying diseases. Furthermore, we may also recommend that your pet receive dental care.
We offer anesthesia-free dentals at Top Choice Animal Hospital!
Our veterinarian will first perform an exam on your pet to determine if they are a candidate. The pet’s temperament needs to allow us to perform it, and the degree of dental disease is taken into consideration. Not all dental problems can be fixed without anesthesia because dental x-rays and extractions cannot be performed with the pet awake. Therefore it is more thorough to perform a full dental procedure under anesthesia (which is the gold standard). At Top Choice Animal Hospital we also offer anesthetic dentals with full-mouth x-rays and any necessary extractions.
However, we do also offer non-anesthetic dentals for those patients that are candidates. This is a great option for pets with more mild tartar or where anesthesia is not an option. Anesthesia-free dental preventative cleanings are also good for patients between anesthetic dental procedures to help reduce tartar.
During the non-anesthetic dental cleaning the technicians scale, polish and fluoride the teeth.
This can only be performed legally in the state of California under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian, which is why our doctor is always present.
Spay is a term that is also called ovariohysterectomy, which is the surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus in a female dog or cat. Neuter is a term that describes castration, or the removal of the testicles in a male dog or cat. These procedures make the pet unable to reproduce which helps the pet overpopulation problem. It also helps eliminate medical problems such as mammary tumors or uterine infections in females and testicular tumors in males. It can also help prevent behavioral issues such as aggression and marking.
We offer high quality, low cost spay and neuter procedures at Top Choice Animal Hospital. Pets are monitored closely while under anesthesia and during recovery by our highly trained staff.
We perform many types of soft tissue surgeries at our clinic. Soft tissue surgeries are those that are not associated with bone. These surgeries can provide many benefits to pets.
The most common soft tissue surgery performed on pets is spaying and neutering.
Another common procedure performed is the removal of masses, or lumps. Many of these masses, once removed and tested, are found to be benign (non-harmful); however, occasionally they are more serious and are found to be malignant. Early removal and accurate diagnosis of a lump is necessary to improve the outcome in your pet if the mass is cancerous.
We also perform gastrotomy, enterotomy, and cystotomy procedures. These are surgical procedures of the gastrointestinal tract and bladder. For example, we can remove foreign bodies from the stomach or intestines if a pet swallowed something that cannot pass. We can also remove bladder stones from the urinary bladder which improves urinary habits and reduces pain for the patient.
Please contact us or book an appointment if you’d like to discuss how soft tissue surgery might be able to help your pet.
